A few weeks ago, someone mentioned that one of their favorite historical figures was John Howland. Of course, whenever anyone mentions interesting history, my ears perk up, and bonus: I had never heard anything about Howland before! His story forever changed the course of his family (and, as it turns out, our nation), so let me tell you about it. In 1620, Howland was swept overboard during an Atlantic storm, and not only did he survive, but his descendants, including some presidents and figures who helped shape America, have lasted for generations.
